King Sihamoni authorises Hun Sen to lead national defence coordination amid escalating border tensions

His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni has formally authorised Senate President and former Prime Minister Hun Sen to coordinate national defence efforts in response to escalating tensions along the Cambodian-Thai border, according to a royal letter obtained today.

In the letter, signed on August 2 at the Royal Palace, King Sihamoni granted full authority to Mr Hun Sen, who is also a five-star retired general and current President of the Supreme Privy Council to the King, to oversee matters related to the military, national defence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Cambodia.

This authorisation allows Mr Hun Sen to work directly with Prime Minister Hun Manet in coordinating Cambodia’s strategic response to what the King described as “grave violations and threats” to national sovereignty by the Thai military.

“In light of the severe threats and violations of our territorial integrity from the Thai armed forces,” the King wrote, “and based on the spirit of the Constitution, I hereby delegate authority to Samdech Techo Hun Sen to engage with Prime Minister Hun Manet on all matters related to national defence.”

The letter also expressed deep admiration and praise for Cambodian soldiers who have fought bravely at the frontline and for citizens nationwide who have shown unity in the face of foreign aggression.

“I wish to express profound respect and heartfelt appreciation for the heroism and bravery of all our Cambodian troops who are courageously defending the homeland, and for the Cambodian people across the country who have stood together in national solidarity,” the King stated.

His Majesty further commended the Royal Government under Prime Minister Hun Manet’s leadership for fighting on “all fronts—military, diplomatic, political, and legal” to safeguard Cambodia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
